How the Pandemic Has Contributed to Poor Posture

Kids using their gadgetsAmong the many things which have suffered in this past year, posture has seen a universal decline. Due to lockdowns and distancing, we are more sedentary. People are working from home at poorly set-up workstations. Our kids are spending many more hours on computers, tablets and devices. Many people have fallen out of their exercise routines.

With all the other serious concerns we are dealing with, why is posture so important? Because our posture can affect bodily function on so many levels. Poor posture makes it harder for us to adapt to the stresses we face, aggravating the physical and mental stresses we deal with.

Posture-Related Problems

Here are some of the many issues people with poor posture can experience:

  • Back pain
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Jaw pain
  • Shoulder pain

Six Key Benefits of Maintaining Good Posture

Now for some good news-adopting and maintaining proper posture can yield an array of benefits:

1) Reduces low back pain- If you’re standing or sitting in a hunched-over position you will likely experience back pain. On the other hand, if you adopt good posture you will be less likely to experience such discomfort.

2) Increases energy- When your bones and joints are properly aligned you’ll have more energy and less fatigue.

3) Decreases tension in shoulders and neck- While forward head posture strains your neck and shoulders, maintaining proper posture can take the stress off joints and ligaments.

4) Increases lung capacity- If you slouch, you’re compressing your lungs which will make breathing difficult. With good posture, your lungs will have more space to expand.

5) Boosts self-confidence- When we adopt proper posture we tend to have more self-esteem which can give us more confidence in our work and personal lives.

6) Reduces stress- From juggling work-related demands to family responsibilities, it’s no wonder so many people are stressed these days. And with the pandemic making life more difficult it’s critical to address stress. Having good posture can help make you more stress-resilient.
